The Hauschild SpeedMixer® Benchtop series, first introduced in 1974, is widely used at universities, research labs, and QC labs worldwide. This workhorse with half a century of heritage has recently been updated with a modern touchscreen interface, improved programmability, and suite of innovative new accessories for vacuum degassing, milling/grinding/dispersion, use of glass/stainless steel containers and more. These new features & accessories give this classic equipment the improved process control versatility needed in modern applications.
The Hauschild SpeedMixer® 400.1-800.1 and 400.2-800.2 series, first introduced in 2010, is widely used to mix adhesives & sealants, coatings, urethanes, electronics manufacturing, personal care products, and many other materials. This series is also available with the ability to vacuum degas while mixing or mix under inert conditions. Its high main RPM, programmability, and configurability/compatibility with accessories make a versatile laboratory mixer. These features also give the equipment the precision, repeatability, and process control needed to handle specialty production applications. Many people prefer the newer LR (Large Radius) geometry, for its improved ability to process large samples. However, we still support this legacy non-LR series for those who have standardized processes in them or for special cases where the higher rotational speed that the non-LR machines offer is advantageous.
Dual Asymmetrical Centrifugal (DAC) mixing - A closed disposable container is rotated around a primary axis. The container is simultaneously counterrotated around on its own Y axis, creating a powerful mixing vortex. This result is fast, homogeneous, repeatable mixing and bubble removal.
The machine’s touchscreen display makes it easy to set, save, and lock programs. This ensures that precisely optimized mixing and degassing methods can be accurately and repeatably reproduced. With minimal training, any operator can achieve exactly the same results. The optional PC interface software allows remote control of the equipment full documentation of all mixing activities for traceability purposes.
VAC series Hauschild SpeedMixer® equipment features the ability to pull and regulate vacuum throughout the process. This removes microbubbles, dissolved air, and can even strip volatile content or purge solvent. The centrifugal motion combined with constant exposure of new surface area makes the process much faster than conventional vacuum degassing methods. It also helps prevent messy boil-overs. The equipment is compatible with any vacuum source and will automatically power & control vacuum pumps up to 700W.
Eliminating Air Bubble Defects in Implantable Medical Devices: A Case Study on Automated Mixing and Degassing
Abstract:
This case study explores how a medical device manufacturer overcame persistent entrained air bubble issues in their product through process optimization and automation. By replacing manual mixing and syringe filling with an automated mixing and degassing process using the Hauschild SpeedMixer®, the company successfully eliminated defects, reduced scrap and rework rates, improved product quality, and enhanced employee satisfaction.
Introduction:
The medical device manufacturer faced significant challenges with entrained air bubbles in their implantable medical devices, resulting in costly rework or scrapping of the parts. The company identified the root cause of the problem as inconsistencies in the manual mixing and syringe filling processes, which allowed air to be trapped in the epoxy material despite vacuum degassing attempts.
Methodology:
To address the air bubble issue, the company adopted an automated mixing and degassing process using the Hauschild SpeedMixer®. This technology ensured a standardized and homogenous mix of the 2-part epoxy, regardless of the operator. The Vacuum SpeedMixer was then utilized degas the epoxy directly within the dispensing syringes. By removing all bubbles, dissolved air, and moisture/volatile content from the material within the syringes, they were able to completely prevent bubble formation during the heat curing process.
Results:
The implementation of the automated mixing and degassing process yielded significant positive outcomes:
Elimination of Air Bubbles: The primary objective of the new process was achieved as it effectively eliminated entrained air bubbles in the finished medical device. This reduction in defects led to improved product quality and significantly reduced scrap and rework rates.
Enhanced Efficiency: The new automated process streamlined operations, saving valuable time previously spent on manual mixing and minimizing production delays caused by defects. The reduction in rework also allowed for more predictable production schedules.
Improved Product Quality: With entrained air bubbles eliminated, the medical devices achieved a higher level of consistency and reliability. This improvement in quality was essential for maintaining the company’s reputation and meeting stringent industry standards.
Increased Employee Satisfaction: Operators and technicians were pleased with the transition to the automated process. The new system reduced the manual labor involved, making the work environment cleaner and more efficient. Moreover, the standardized mixing program ensured consistent results across all operators, mitigating variations caused by human error.
